  2. Sullenly • Definition: showing gloom or sadness • Part of Speech: adverb • Sentence: I leaned back next to him sullenly. "I guess so."

  3. Faltered • Definition: to hesitate; to lose courage; stumble • Part of Speech: verb • Sentence: The student faltered with his words, but he eventually told the truth.

  4. Leery • Definition: untrusting • Part of Speech: adjective • Sentence: We mostly stuck with our own outfits, so I was a little leery of going over to him, but I shrugged.

  5. Contempt • Definition: lack of respect; the act of despising • Part of Speech: verb • Sentence: Because Darry was standing there representing all of us, and maybe Paul felt only contempt and pity and hate for greasers?
