Writing your rebuttal Identifying the Other Side
The Purpose of a Rebuttal: • To show that you understand both sides of the argument • To show that even though you understand the other side, you STILL chose your side • Counters arguments that the other side has • Makes your side look stronger
Begin your rebuttal by saying… • Even though the other side believes… • The opposing side might say… • A popular view might be… • The other side of the argument is… • Opponents may argue that…
Then… • Explain an opposing argument • Maybe even give a quote or research information to show their side • Counter the opposing argument by using your own ideas and information from your research to show why they are WRONG
Example: • An essay in support of school uniforms: • A popular view amongst students might be that not wearing school uniforms allows students to express themselves through their clothing choices. Bob Johnson states in his article that 6 out of 10 students see wearing their own clothes as a way to show who they really are (23). While the idea of teenagers being able to express themselves is good, school should not be the place to do so. Students have the opportunity to wear clothes that express themselves in the hours outside of school. How some students choose to “express themselves” with clothing can be disruptive, demeaning, and unacceptable in a school setting.
