Walkathon: Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 • Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this fabulous school event and am very disappointed about it. I will be in Tahoe that day for a wedding. I apologize for my absence and hope to see lots of wonderful pictures! • Volunteers are still needed for this event. You can sign up to be a volunteer by clicking here: http://booksinwat.ivolunteer.com/ • Password is case sensitive: Oct12green • BESCA is also asking for drink donations such as water and juice for this event. Please bring them if you can. ELA News We have begun our literacy collaborative groups during the morning ELA block on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Students are either working on literacy tasks assigned to each group or they are reading in a small group with a parent volunteer or teacher. Each guided reading session includes1) rereading a familiar book, 2) working with words, 3) previewing a new book, 4)reading a new book, and 5) discussing the text. We have been working on words with all. Next week we will be working on base words and endings -ed and –ing. We will also work on Key Ideas. Students will identify the main topic of a text and will use illustrations in a text to describe its key ideas. Math News Field Trip Information Where: Pizza My Heart When: Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 8:45-noon I only have 22 permission slips, so I still need a few more. Please return them to me completed by this Friday, so I can organize the groups. Thanks! There will be 7 wonderful chaperones joining us for this trip, so the students will be in good hands. ------------------------------------------------------------Next week, October 16, 17, and 18, I will be at the district office collaborating with other teachers from San Jose Unified to create assessments for the Common Core ELA Scope and Sequence. Therefore, I will not be at Booksinand apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. In math next week (as well as the one after that!), we will be focusing on understanding addition within 10. The students will learn multiple ways to represent solutions to problems. They will learn that there are three types of addition problems: result unknown (8+9=17), change unknown (8+_=17), and start unknown (__+9=17). An important part of the new common core standards is being able to determine if equations involving addition are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6=6, 7=6+1, 4+1=5+2. We will be working on that a lot too in the next two weeks!
