KickstartTV – SOME BACKGROUND • KickstartTV is an LSC Widening Participation project • Remit: “to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of using Interactive Digital Television (IdTV) as part of the learning process” • Focus:attraction, engagement and signposting • 6 months’ transmission on Sky and Telewest • Evaluation undertaken by LSDA
KickstartTV – SOME BACKGROUND • KickstartTV is a 24/7 interactive TV service to help users ‘brush up their skills’ • KickstartTV is intended to be an ‘inclusive’ communication tool (language & numeracy at Level 1 / 2) • It consists of • Topic-based ‘taster’ exercises, currently literacy, numeracy and job skills • Games, quizzes, hints and tips, related information and supporting videos • Signposting to further advice, guidance and learning
KickstartTV – RAISING AWARENESS • A learning / communication tool for: • Intermediary organisations • Education and information providers • Employer organisations • End users • Being promoted through: • Intermediary organisations • CD-ROMs • Presentations • Emails/mailbase • Web site • National Advice Line • Direct links to KickstartTV

KickstartTV – THE VIDEOS • Promoting the power of improved skills, such as language, numeracy and jobskills • Real people talking about how it has made a difference, in their jobs, with their families, or with everyday tasks such as cooking and shopping. • Transmitted on the Community Channel, a charity TV channel on Sky • ‘Red button’ interactivity enables viewers to go directly to the Sky version of kickstartTV from the videos
KickstartTV – THE GAMES • The games are available on the Telewest version of KickstartTV • More informal learning activity than the taster exercises • Aim is to attract users to ‘have a go’ • 3 types of game developed to date (wordsearch, quiz and number games) • Topic-based, covering areas such as Gardening, Shopping and DIY.
