Climate Change Conference Paul Public Charter School Washington, DC GreenSchools! Club
While Working With the Toolkit, We Learned About… • The causes of climate change and how it affects trees, animals and habitats • Birds; where they live now, and how they may be affected in years to come • The impact on wildlife by humans and climate change • Burning fossil fuels like coal and gas are primary sources for energy in the United States and cause most of our country’s Green House Gas emissions
Many Surprises! • Many more animals are endangered than we knew • We didn’t realize the species we didn’t think were important are critical in the role of life • Many plants and animals moved north in computer models of climate change. We thought they would stay the same. • How much our actions affect animals like birds, turtles, and walruses • Climate change drastically affects land formation such as coastline changes • Pesticides can affect beneficial insects like bees as well as pests
What We Will Do • Encourage people to create wildlife habitat nearby, • Avoid polluting animal habitats so they can live and avoid extinction, • Cut off lights, television, and recycle, • Dispose of waste properly and become more active as opposed to watching television, • Encourage others to help • Learn about other countries and how we affect each other
More Action Items • Plant more trees, • Persuade entrepreneurs to be more green, • Consider solar panels as a source of energy, • Talk to custodial staff about cutting off lights at night, • Recycle, reduce, reuse and encourage our peers to become eco-friendly, • Make a poster for the community, telling people to start walking more often, • Create wildlife habitat in the community, • Hold assemblies to notify people about wildlife being affected by global warming
Our Questions • What have you learned that surprised you about climate change? • What else can we do to help the environment? • What are you doing to help stop climate change? • What is it like in Denmark? • What are some similarities and differences between Denmark and the United States? • Is your experience in Denmark what you expected?
