Microsoft Project 2010 - Tips and Tricks Ms. Manmeet Chaudhari MVP, MCTS, MCITP, MCP Sr. Project Advisor – AdvisiconInc
Setting the deadline date • Handy way to alert you to problems in your schedule • Deadline dates are soft dates and they DO NOT participate in the schedule • All committed dates should be marked as deadline
Working with Inactive tasks • Perform what-if analysis • Fine tune project scope and resource planning • Providing alternative options in a scope • Providing risk mitigation tasks
Manual scheduling versus Auto scheduling • User controlled scheduling • Create manually scheduled task anywhere in the project • Top down approach for scheduling • Easy for Excel based scheduling users
Scenarios for automatic versus manual tasks • You begin with a high level list of deliverables • There are areas in your project that don’t have a well understood scope • Waterfall model – Project lifecycle management • You are given a timeframe to deliver a project
Assigning tasks to generic resources • Generic resources are placeholder resources that are used to specify the skills required for a specific task • Useful in cases you do not know the named/specific resources to be assigned • Valuable for gauging skillset requirement for a project • You can vary the resource availability using the resource table
Adding miscellaneous cost to tasks • Cost resources is an easy way of applying miscellaneous or multiple costs to a task, like airfare and dining • Cost resources are independent of • Calendars • Amount of work done on a task • You can assign different values of the same cost resources across tasks
The Team Planner view • A resource scheduling view that lets you interact with your schedule • Drag and drop task from one person to another • Drag unassigned tasks • Re-assign tasks • View overallocations and resolve them • Reduced the pain of manually levelling resources
Working with the Timeline View • Concise view of entire schedule • Easily add/remove tasks and milestones from timeline • Create summary report of entire schedule • Copy past into email or presentations for quick report
Re-using the same Project data • Save projects as templates • Standard set of tasks or resources that can be used as starting point for creating new project • Useful for organizations implementing similar projects
Collaborating information using SharePoint • Upload your file to SharePoint library • Use the new Sync to Task list feature
