Objectives • Lecture • To present the steps in searching, retrieving and appraising of the guidelines • Practical work • To develop a search strategy to exhaust existing clinical guidelines relevant to the topic • To apply the search strategy in various relevant guideline sites: • To evaluate the quality of the guidelines using the iCAHE guideline tool
Designing the search • Comprehensive guideline is needed • Clinical guidelines + P (population with the condition) + I (intervention)
Keywords • Keywords for the stroke guideline • clinical guidelines AND stroke OR occlusive vascular diseases OR transient ischemic attacks AND rehabilitation. • Keywords for the low back pain guideline • clinical guidelines AND low back pain OR acute/sub-acute/chronic low back pain AND rehabilitation.
Search engines • National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), • Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) • National Health and Medical Research Center (NHMRC) • New Zealand Guidelines Group (NZGG) • National Guidelines Clearinghouse (NGC) • Google, Google Scholar and Professional websites (general search) • Locally published clinical guidelines
Inclusion criteria 1. Includes rehabilitation as part of the guideline 2. Is written in English 3. Publication date from 2006 – 2011
Retrieval • Retrieval of the guidelines was done during the 2-day workshop • Updated search and retrieval all through out the period of writing the guidelines
Critical appraisal of the guidelines • Important to assess guideline quality • iCAHE guideline tool – practical and easy to use guideline checklist
