2. Canadian Experience Class to include foreign PhD students • Canadian Experience Class is an immigration category for skilled temporary foreign workers and international students who wish to become permanent residents • 3,917 permanent residents were admitted to Canada in 2010 through the CEC program • PhD students can begin applying November 5 • To be eligible, PhD students must have completed at least 2 years of study toward their degree and be in good academic standing. • Graduates who are a year out of their program are also eligible to apply • Up to 1,000 international PhD students a year will be accepted through the Federal Skilled Worker Program • The aim is to boost Canada’s science, technology, and math sectors • Will provide universities with another competitive edge in attracting and retaining top international talent. • Source: CBC News, November 2

3. Ontario tuition grant to take effect in January • Ontario Legislature to resume today • 30 per cent tuition reduction was a key plank in the Liberal Party’s re-election platform • Will be built into the provincial budget • Applies to students from families with incomes under $160,000 • The grant could save university students up to $1,600 and college students $730 • Program will cost $201M in 2012 and $423M in 2013/14 • Ontario NDP called for a four-year tuition freeze in their platform • Ontario PCs have not formally signaled their stance on the proposal • Source: The Toronto Star, November 17

Globe and Mail University Report 2012 • Waterloo in 1st place among large institutions in Career Preparation (A-) • Waterloo was one of only three schools across the country to receive an A+ grade in Reputation with Employers • Tied for 1st place among large institutions in Research Opportunities (B), Class Size (B+) • 2nd place among large institutions in Course Registration (B+) • Tied for 2nd place in Quality of Teaching (B+), Most Satisfied Students (B+), Information Technology (B+), and Student Residences (B) • Waterloo made the “Ivy League” category alongside the University of Toronto, McGill, Queen’s, UWO, UBC, Alberta, and McMaster.

Highlights from the Audited Financial Statements for the Year Ending April 30, 2011 • Revenue - $781M, a 6 per cent increase over last year • Scholarships and Bursaries - $88M, a 9 per cent increase over last year • University infrastructure - $134M in new capital assets • Endowment fund market value – up $20.5M

17. Mid-Cycle Review update • Total number of planned sessions: 44 (September 12 – December 6) • Total number of sessions completed: 33 (as of November 21) • Number of participants so far: • 65 students • Over 700 faculty/staff • 25 alumni/donors • Online survey being sent to all students, faculty, staff and 67,000 alumni • Over 2,220 survey responses to date, with over 1,170 from undergraduates
