Romans Romans 1-8 – “Good News” Romans 9-16 – “Unity”
We are brought into a right relationship with God. We cannot create one by our own criteria. • We can desire that others are saved but it is between them and God. • Zeal does not mean that someone is in a right relationship with God. • Zeal has to be combined with correct knowledge. • The good news is for everyone!
Did God Reject The Jews? Romans 11:1-15 No, they have stumbled on Jesus but they have not fallen beyond recovery and their loss means riches to the Gentiles.
Grafted In: Grafting can be done in many ways but the principle is the same. You take the benefits of one and add them to the other. Without that graft many of these trees would die when it became colder than they would normally be able to handle. Because of the graft they were able to thrive and not just survive.
What Needs to Happen? Allow ourselves to be cut off from our old root system. Go through a connecting process. Accept filling from another source. Remain connected to the vine. Enjoy our connection to the vine and other branches – take and give. Naturally mature to the point of bearing fruit. A graft is not the natural part of the plant or it is not in its natural place. Grafts are fragile until they are well set and show signs of maturity.
Romans 11:16-24 Page 1762 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
Romans 11:16-24 Page 1762 Ro 11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,18 do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
Romans 11:22-23 Ro 11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
Romans 11:24 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
How the Chapter Ends Romans 11:25-32 – Shows that both Jew and Gentile had periods of disobedience and obedience but God shows mercy on us all. Romans 11:33-36 is a prayer based on Old Testament scripture focusing on God’s wisdom.
Looking to Jesus: When we look to Jesus we see His life, death, burial, and resurrection and when we first start growing the first major step is the process of putting to death our old sinful nature and it is a process that we go through until the end.
Inhabitation: Christlikeness is not produced by imitation, but by inhabitation.
This Week We Can Consider Where do I need to be cut off from my old root system? How am I being connected to Jesus, His purposes, and the congregation? What am I doing to be spiritually filled?
This Week We Can Consider: How do I remain connected to Jesus as the vine? How does God’s love flow through me to others? How am I bearing fruit? Grafts are fragile until they are well set so who do I know that would accept the help to become established and show signs of maturity?
In Conclusion: You have been grafted in; your life is not your own. Trust the new root system and remain connected to God and to others. Next week – Romans 12 and a sermon titled “Living Sacrifices”
