  2. Jack and Algernon were pretending to be brothers, but in the end they found out that they were actually brothers. • “You are the son of… consequently Algernon’s elder brother.” • Jack’s name is actually Ernest. • “I always told you… Well, it is Ernest after all.” Delayed irony

  3. “He subsequently stayed to tea, and devoured every single muffin.” • “you need not eat as if you were going to eat it all.” • Reference to cucumber sandwiches and the bread and butter. • Now, Algernon is the one who is eating all the muffins, which suggests that now, he is rushing into marriage, like how Jack used to. Hypocrisy

  4. Algernon says that he wants to be engaged to Gwendolen, but he used to criticise marriage. • “Well, I simply wanted to be engaged to Cecily. I adore her.” • “Is marriage so demoralising as that?”

  5. “Yes.. Mother” Timing

Wilde is laughing at upper class society, ending the play on a silly note. • Everything they lied about became true. • Making fun of himself: it is impossible, yet in fiction, it’s allowed. • “I always told you… Well, it is Ernest after all.” • “You are the son of… consequently Algernon’s elder brother.” SATIRE

  7. He has always been lying, but now he’s saying that he has never lied. • “Gwendolen… all his life he has been speaking nothing but the truth.” INVERSION
