P. 36:Infectious Disease Lab Pre-lab: Write the objectives under the title: -Students will be able to understand how infectious diseases spread through a population. -Students will be able to identify behaviors that increase or decrease the risk of infections. Make a “T” chart listing 5 diseases that you know about and how they are transmitted (Direct contact/Indirect Contact/Vector etc.).
Lab Procedures (Think Safety!) • Put on a pair of goggles and obtain a cup of “body fluid” and a dropper. • Label your cup with your name. • Obtain a “behavior card” • Exchange “fluid” with partner or partners (based on your behavior card) by dropping five drops of your fluid into their cup. Do not touch your dropper to their fluid! Return leftover fluid to your cup. • Record each partner’s name!
Complete your “infection tree” based on your interactions. Attach the infection tree to the top of page 36. • Write a complete summary (using academic language) of the lab including information on what you think can or should be done to stop the spread of HIV.
