Class Basics • This class is taught in English, since you all speak different languages • If you don’t understand something, raise your hand, give me a thumbs down, and ask me to “Rephrase” • Rephrase- “Say the same thing using different words” • Rephrasings on my presentations are within brackets • [Rephrasings on my lecture slides look like this]

  3. Practice Asking Me to Rephrase • Do not be shy! I promise I will be nice. • [Do not be afraid! I won’t be mean] • I’m going to summarize the events I’ve experienced already today. • [I will tell you about my day] • If you need me to rephrase something, raise your hand and give me a thumbs down. • [If you don’t understand the words I use, put your hand in the air and turn your thumb towards the floor]

Course Goals • Expand your vocabulary to match that of the most college students • [learn words that most college students know] • Learn the improper, yet more frequently used English neglected in traditional English class • [Learn the incorrect words most people use instead of the correct words] • Practice articulating thoughts more precisely • [Practice saying exactly what you mean]

Group Activity! • Get in groups of four • Talk to each other about places or situations where you see or hear words you don’t understand. • Describes things you don’t know the word for, see if your group mates know the English word for it. • Practice rephrasing your sentences with your group. • I will come around to each group and talk with you all
