How Does Ultranationalism Develop? Chapter 6 (Green pp. 141-148) (Red pp. 136-140)
How does Ultranationalism develop? • Countries in Crisis • Germany after WWI. • Japan after WWI • Charismatic Leaders • Adolf Hitler in Germany • Hirohito and Tojo in Japan • Instilling Nationalist Values • Ultranationalist Values in Germany • Ultranationalist Values in Japan
Germany after World War One • Although Germany became a republic (democracy) after World War I, it was a new form of government for the country and it wasn’t very successful.
Germany during the 1920’s and 30’s • Hit Germany very hard • Reparation payments needed to be made. • No longer had income from colonies and lost control over some German industry. • Many Germans lost their jobs facing homelessness and starvation. • Hyperinflation – the German currency became worthless as the government printed more money
This table shows what happened to the price of bread in Berlin (prices in marks):
Germany turns to Hitler • Germans wanted a strong leader who would “fix” the country. • National Socialist German Workers (Nazi) Party gained support and Hitler was elected as Chancellor of Germany
Hitler in Power • Once elected as Chancellor he unified the positions of President and Chancellor and became the Furher (Leader) • Took control of all matters: social, economic, political, military, and culture. • Freedom of speech, the press, and assembly suspended. • Communications were no longer private.
