The Nature Of Science Chapter 1 Section 1 Continued…
Experiments • One thing that all experiments have are variables. Variables are the different factors that can change in an experiment. • There are three types of variables we use in experiments • Independent variables • Constants • Dependent variables
Experiments • Independent variables- These are the variables that change in your experiment • So for example, in yesterdays demonstration with the Coke and Diet coke the variables where the coke and diet coke. Because I didn’t just test only the diet coke, or only the regular coke.
Experiments • Constants- These are the variables that don’t change in an experiment. • So yesterday some of the constants were the amount of water in the tank, the size of the cans, the material that made the can.
Experiments • Dependent Variables- this is the variable being measured. • Again in the coke vs. diet coke experiment the dependent variable was how well each can floated.
Experiments • Also there are controls. Controls are not always used in experiments but often are. Controls- are a standard to which your results can be compared. • A control we could have used, but we didn’t would be a coke can full of water. This would have shown us that the metal can does not affect the buoyancy.
