The Great Society LBJ’s grand vision to better America had three goals: End racial injustices End poverty Create a higher standard of living for all Americans Education was going to be the key to his program This will lead to reforms in cities, poverty, environment, consumer advocacy, and discrimination

  4. The Great Society in Action • War on Poverty: forty programs that were intended to eliminate poverty by improving living conditions and enabling people to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. 
 • Education: sixty separate bills that provided for new and better-equipped classrooms, minority scholarships, and low-interest student loans.

Medicare & Medicaid: guaranteed health care to every American over sixty-five.

The Environment: introduced measures to reclaim our heritage of clean air and water. 

National Endowment for the Arts and the Humanities: created with the philosophy that artists, performers, and writers were a priceless part of our heritage and deserve support.
 • Job Corps: provided enabling skills for young men and women. • Head Start: program for four- and five-year-old children from disadvantaged families that gave them a chance to start school on an even basis with other youngsters. • Best known Great Society programs: • HUD and DOT • Medical Care Act • PBS • Civil Rights Act of 1964 • 24th Amendment • Voting Rights Act • Elementary and Secondary Education Act • Clean Air Act

  10. Miranda v Arizona 1966 Accused must be made aware of their rights before police questioning

  11. Looking back at The Great Society LBJ did expand power of President and Fed. Govt. Did raise awareness of new and old problems in US Tax cuts helped stimulate economy Deficit spending spiked the national debt Conservative backlash will arise in the 1970s Gains made in Civil Rights, education, and health care LBJ’s grand vision of The Great Society will be shot down over the rice patties of Vietnam
