Capturing just 5-10% of that energy could run substantial wearable technology directly, and also be accumulated for later use. • Heat pump technology can be used in the helmet to capture waste heat energy with the added benefit of cooling the soldier. • The helmet controller electronics could modify its operational state based on air and scalp temperature and energy demand. Title: “Smart” Land Mines Offeror Name Date Concept: • Operational Capability: • “Smart” land mines could disarm themselves after a designated time interval or upon receipt of a proper encrypted disarm command. • An encrypted command could also be used to disarm the mine and activate a location signal. • “Smart” mines could employ advanced sensor and signal processing to trigger detonation. They could be used to establish a defensive perimeter, individually detonated by encrypted command (in addition to enemy contact criteria), and then disabled to allow transition by friendly forces. • Failsafe mechanisms render the mine “safe” upon failure of the internal electronics. The sclera and pupil have very different IR reflectivities. Problem: People should be able to interact with a computer to manipulate information in a more natural way than available with current methods. Mice, touch screens, and keyboards are inadequate to the task. It is much more natural for people to talk, look, point, grasp, and gesture. Title: Simple Data Acquisition Device using PC Sound-Card Audio Input Offeror Name Date Concept: • Operational Capability: • Input signals can be made to modulate a carrier frequency, effectively overcoming the problem of blocked DC signals. • A software driver would be developed to decode the incoming data into voltage and pass the data to software packages such as NeatTools and LabView. • The system would digitize two channels of data with an input voltage range of ±10V and an input frequency range of 0-40 kHz. The digitized data would have 12-16 bits of resolution, depending on the sound card employed. • A PCB population option would allow the inputs to be electrically isolated from the computer. • The device would be powered from an external supply or batteries. Problem: Almost all PC’s have a sound card with 2-channel audio input capabilities. In newer computers, these inputs are capable of digitizing sound in excess of 80 ksamples/s at resolutions of 12-bits or more. Software packages such as Freeview (www.inesinc.com/sound.htm) take advantage of these capabilities. These inputs are largely unused. However, slot space for added data acquisition boards is often at a premium, particularly in laptop computers. Title: Field-Deployable, Self-Configuring Sensor Net Offeror Name Date • Operational Capability • Deployment by helicopter or other aircraft, mortar, or artillery. • Deployed objects are two types of sphere-shaped sensor weighted such that they tend to roll into preferred orientation. • One device is deployed in small quantities and is a hub/relay for the other devices within its vicinity. The hub device knows its position via GPS and provides an uplink node (cell or satellite) for the data collected by the more numerous sensor nodes. • The other type of device is deployed in larger numbers. These devices contain various transducers such as audio, video, chemical, biological, temperature, etc., depending on the type of sensor. These sensor devices are located via pulse-echo triangulation from the uplink hub once the sensor net has configured itself.
