Digestive System • Two types of digestion • Mechanical- your teeth, rip, break and crush food particles • Chemical- saliva contains enzymes that break down food molecules and makes it a slippery mass of food that will slide down easier.
Mouth • the first part of the digestive system, where food enters the body.Chewing and salivary enzymes in the mouth are the beginning of the digestive process (breaking down the food).
Esophagus • the long tube between the mouth and the stomach. • It uses rhythmic muscle movements to force food from the throat into the stomach. • Moves food from mouth to stomach
Stomach • Stores and breaks down food
Small intestine • Where most chemical digestion and absorption takes place. • removes nutrients from food and brings water and electrolytes in the body
Large intestine • Absorbs water and salts from food and excretes solid waste material
