Rock threat danger closes part of Yosemite lodging November 21, 2008 1:22 PM EST YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, California - Officials with the National Park Service say they will close part of a popular lodging complex at Yosemite National Park because an unstable cliff has created the potential for deadly rock fall. • Park officials said Friday that 233 cabins will close permanently, or about one-third of the lodging units available to park visitors at Curry Village. About half of the 618 cabins have been off-limits since a rock fall on the historic complex Oct. 8. • An Associated Press story this week said federal geologists have warned for at least a decade that the granite face of Glacier Point above Curry Village was dangerous. • Despite two deaths and an increase in the frequency and severity of the rock falls since 1996, park officials had been reluctant to act.
Chemical Weathering • Co2 and rainwater react with limestone--creates calcium bicarbonate—carbonation • water reacts with and alumino-silicates--hydrolysis • O2 reacts with iron—oxidation (rust)
Mass Movement • Down slope movement of materials due to gravity • Slope and water flow will determine the degree of mass movement Talus Slopes/Flows
Erosion • The movement of weathered material by various agents-- • Water with gravity—major force • Moving ice • Wind
