What is it??? • It is a National Park in Morton County, Kansas • It’s an area covered in grassland but contains • Rock cliffs • Cottonwood groves • Grassy fields • Yucca and Sage plants • The grassy plain that contains native grasses and Riparian vegetation • The grassy plain contains 108,175 acres of grassland • You can have fun doing: • Bird watching • Hunting • Picnicking • Fishing • Etc.
History • It is 1 of 20 grasslands in the United States • Following the most disastrous years of the infamous Dust Bowl of the 1930s, the federal government bought land and took it out of production in order to help control wind erosion that was ravaging the Great Plains. In 1954 it was designated a national grassland and assigned to the Forest Service. • Twenty-three miles of the Santa Fe Trail cut across the grassland. Two of the best known landmarks along the entire Santa Fe Trail are located here.
