  1. END OF COURSE(STAAR) Monday, April 1 – Writing Tuesday, April 2 – Reading

  2. 4 HOURS • The test is timed - pace yourself so you are as strong at the finish as you are at the start.

  3. MONDAY - WRITING Read each passage and answer the multiple choice questions 15 revising questions such as: *How can Tasha revise sentence 7 to more clearly establish the thesis of this paper? *Sentences 10 and 11 are choppy and ineffective. What is the best way to revise these sentences? *Tasha wants to improve the transition between the third paragraph (sentences 13–17) and the fourth paragraph (sentences 18–20). Which sentence could best follow sentence 17 and help improve this transition?

  4. MONDAY – WRITINGRead each passage and answer the multiple choice questions • 15 editing questions such as: • * What change, if any, should be made in sentence 3? • * What is the correct way to rewrite sentences 15 and 16?

  5. MONDAY - WRITING 2. Write THREE essays (one page each): *Literary – “Write a story…” THIS ESSAY WILL INCLUDE ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY – CHARACTERS, SETTING, PLOT *Expository – “Write an essay explaining…” THIS ESSAY SHOULD HAVE A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT THAT IS SUPPORTED WITH EXAMPLES AND DETAILS. ***The third essay may be either a literary or an expository.

  7. TUESDAY – READING • Read each passage and answer the multiple choice questions. • Selections will include: • Fiction – such as poetry, short stories, and drama (plays) • Nonfiction – articles that may include pictures, charts, and graphs

  9. TUESDAY – READINGTwo short answer questions – one about a single selection and one about paired selections. • TIP FOR A “3” • Dig deeper – go beyond the literal, surface level. 1. Answer the question. 2. Support your answer with text evidence. 3. Explain the significance of your text evidence.

  10. REMEMBER!!!! • 1. Use the dictionary when you are unsure of a word! 2. Read each question carefully to make sure you understand what is being asked! • 3. Answer the question! • 4. Check your work if time allows!
