  3. Introductory Paragraphs • Your introductory paragraphs (at least two) will give a summary of the story by Anne Fadiman (1997). Especially focus on the actions of the main characters of the story: Nao Kao Lee, Foua Yang Lee, Lia Lee, Dr. Neil Ernst, Dr. Peggy Philp, and the hospital administration/personnel at Merced Community Medical Center (MCMC).

  4. Lia Lee’s Parents How Lia Lee’s Parents Could Have Improved Her Outcome This paragraph will re-imagine the story in such a way that you explain what Lia’s parents could have done differently for Lia. I think everyone would agree that Nao Kao and Foua Yang Lee loved their daughter beyond all measure, but try to think of some ways that they could have acted and/or reacted differently. We are not assigning blame here … just looking at the situation in retrospect and looking for ways to improve a future outcome.

  5. Lia Lee’s Doctors How Dr. Ernst and Dr. Philp Could Have Improved Lia’s Outcome In the same way, here you will discuss ways that you believe the doctors could have improved Lia’s outcome. Again, we are not blaming; we are just studying an event in the hope that similar situations we may encounter in the future may have a better result.

  6. MCMC Personnel and Administration How Merced County Medical Center and the Hospital Personnel Could Have Improved Lia’s Outcome The same idea will be developed here. How could have the hospital personnel provided a better outcome for Lia?

  7. Concluding Paragraph Then you will need to develop a concluding paragraph that summarizes the points that you made above. Bring the paper to a reasonable conclusion. For full credit, the content of the paper will be at least 3-5 pages long (not including the title page or reference list). Also, the assignment calls for 3-5 references that should appear on the reference list and be cited somewhere within the body of your paper. Obviously, the Fadiman book will be one of them as shown.

  8. References (3-5) Fadiman, A. (1997). The spirit catches you and you fall down: A Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures. New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. [Three to five references in APA format are required in a hanging indent as shown above – but double spaced; all references correctly cited within the body of the paper; entire paper double spaced; correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation (only 1 space following a period, question mark, etc.); 1-inch margins; font size 12; and body of the paper preceded by a title page.]
