Aim, strategic question and empirical questions • Purpose • Develop an understanding of the unique context of Oman to determine the implementation of effective leadership development strategies within Oman’s private sector. • Explore leadership in the private sector of Oman through an empirical study and underpinned by robust literature review. Research Questions • 1. How can the Omani private sector develop effective leaders for senior positions? • a. What is the current strategy in the Omani private sector for developing leaders for senior positions? • b. How can effective leadership development the Omani private sector be implemented?

The rationale for the project • Unique Social-Cultural-Political Context • Traditional and Hierarchical Models enforced • Top down, poor communications, Low morale • Lack of empirical research about leadership within Oman & Middle East private sector • Need for in-depth knowledge on effective leadership in the Sultanate. • Difficulty accessing & conducting research in Oman (Common, 2011).

Initial justification against literature • Little understanding about the applicability of the concept of leadership in the Arab Gulf States • Research will provide significant insight on the leadership approaches adopted by the organizations operating in the private sector of Oman. • Sultanate has begun to recognize the need for developing its private sector for achieving rapid economic growth in the light of its ‘2020 Vision. • Essential for the Sultanate to develop its leaders for senior positions in order to direct the workforce and utilize organizational resources efficiently for achieving strategic goals.

The questions for more reading • In order to understand how can the Omani private sector can develop effective leaders for senior positions, • Understand current strategy in the Omani private sector for developing leaders for senior positions, and • Understand how can effective leadership development the Omani private sector be implemented • I will gauge from the upcoming literature review a deep and solid grasp of literature and theory on • Effective Leadership and Leadership in Practice; Leadership Capability, Skills-Gap Assessment and Leadership Development Strategy in the context of Leadership in Oman.
