What is Effective Classroom Management? • What does it look like? • What does it sound like?
Essential Components of Effective Classroom Management • Explicit Rules and Procedures • Consistent and Fair Consequences • Engaging Lessons!!!!
Procedures vs RulesWhat is the difference? • Rules are expected norms regarding behavior • Procedures concern how things get done in the classroom.

“A teacher is one who makes herself progressively unnecessary.” -Thomas Carruthers
Rules • Guidelines for Creating Rules • Limit to 5 or 6 • Specific is better • Consistent with school rules • Understandable • Manageable • Always Applicable • Positive • Consistent with Teacher’s Philosophy
Consequences“Be proactive, not reactive.” – Fred Jones • Consequences should be: • Logical and comfortable for the teacher • Be specific and concrete • Set up in a hierarchy – small to big • Avoid consequences that remove students from the learning environment unless absolutely necessary
Consequences • With your table partner, highlight 3 or 4 consequences from each section on the handout that you would feel comfortable doing in your classroom.
Action Plan • Create a tentative plan for rules, consequences, and procedures to start the year.Jot down any tasks you need to complete prior to the start of school in order toimplement your action plan.
