Digestive System 3rd Grade Science Miss Copeland
Mouth • First, ourteethstart the process by chewing • The tongue is also working by helping swallow the food • Moistening salivastarts the chemical digestion ( enzymes break down large molecules of the food into smaller ones the body can absorb)
Throat • Food passes down the throat to the esophagus-a hollow organ that transports contents.
Stomach • Theesophagusempties into the stomach- a large muscular chamber that mixes up food. • Hydrolic Acid works to help dissolve the stomachs contents and any harmful bacteria
Small Intestine • The small intestineis where major digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. • The nutrients are then taken into the bloodstream and transported to the liver.
Large Intestine • What’s left in the digestive tract passes into the large intestine, there it’s eaten by billions of harmless bacteria and mixed with dead cells to from solid feces. • Water is reabsorbed into the body while the feces is moved to the rectum for expulsion.
