  1. Side Event at COP-8 in New Delhi, IndiaThu 31 Oct 2002 at 6.00 p.m.Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002I. Savolainen, Research ProfessorVTT ProcessesTechnical Research Centre of Finland • http://www.climtech.vtt.fi/ • http://www.tekes.fi/english/programm/climtech

  2. Background information on Finland- energy intensive industry- cold climate, long distances- few domestic energy sources- 70 % of energy imported- response diversified and effective energy system research and development

  3. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 Objectives of the programme • to support mitigation of climate change, and • attainment of the national climate change mitigation objectives • by contributing to technological choices, research, development, commercialisation and implementation. • The time scale for the technologies studied extends to about 2030 • The programme will be implemented from 1999 to 2002 and funding from National Technology Agency (Tekes) is EUR 3 million out of the total budget of EUR 4 million

  4. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 • CLIMTECH projects (28) have been roughly divided to six subject fields: 1. Renewable energy sources and distributed energy production (5) 2. Energy efficiency and industry (6) 3. Non-CO2 greenhouse gases (2) 4. Capture and utilisation of CO2 (2) 5. Models and systems (10) 6. Commercialisation (3) • 8 companies and 7 research institutes carry out research work in the CLIMTECH projects. Additionally, several companies participate in financing and/or in executive group working of the research projects.

  5. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 Results • The demand of new technologies will grow strongly due to the restriction of greenhouse gas emissions • Finland has already high-grade energy technologies, e.g. utilisation of biomass fuels, gasification of waste, wind energy technology, diesel engines, power electronics etc. • Export possibilities are expected to grow strongly • New Finnish technology can accordingly be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not only in Finland but all over the world

  6. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 • The results of the CLIMTECH programme are published in many different ways because of the communicative role of the programme: • project reports (mainly in Finnish with English abstracts, some reports in English; see Internet pages) • printed result brochures of individual projects (also in English, pdf documents from Internet pages) • technical final report of the programme (in English) • edited CLIMTECH book in Finnish • printed English summary of the CLIMTECH book (about 30 pages) • The final reports of the programme will be completed by the final seminar of the CLIMTECH programme (February 2003)

  7. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 Some example results - Wind Energy • global capacity is 24 000 MW in 2001, 25 % installed in 2001 • global market in 2010 is estimated to be 15 000 - 25 000 MW/a • present market share of the Finnish industry is about 5 % • in some components higher: gears 10 - 15 % generators 20 - 30 % blade materials ~30 % ice prevention systems ~100 %

  8. Export of wind energy technology from Finland

  9. Wind power market

  10. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 Some example results - Energy use of biomass • 20 % of primary energy supply in Finland • 10 % of electricity production • coproduction of heat and electricity • side-product fuels from forestry and industry

  11. Oy AlholmensKraft Ab in Pietarsaari (biofuel-CFB, 240 MWe and 160 MW heat) Energy Globe 2002 Stig Nickull

  12. Oy AlholmensKraft Ab in Pietarsaari (biofuel-CFB)

  13. Herrala Saw Mill - BioEnergy Compact (2.6 MWth using saw mill residues) Wartsila BioPower

  14. Harvesting slash in bundles

  15. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 Some example results - Energy use of biomass • modern clean and effective burning techniques available • large global potential • fuels can base on side-products from agriculture, forestry, industry and households • distributed fuel base fits to distributed generation of heat and electricity • need for expensive infrastructure limited • short construction times

  16. Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)1999-2002 SUMMARY • The task of the Climtech programme is to help in the identification of the most significant technological development fields • The results of the Climtech programme can be used in companies in the selection of long term strategies for technology development for domestic and export markets • Technology can offer win-win alternatives to control greenhouse gas emissions
