Declaration of Independence: Introduction,“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bandswhich have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
The Preamble,“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Luke 14:26,“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.”
Did our Lord really mean that we should hate our families in the sense that we think of hatred? Absolutely not.
Hatred can be a sin, Lev 19:17; Titus 3:3; 1 John 2:9-11; 3:15; 4:20.
Lev 19:17, “You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.”
1 John 2:9, 11, “The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now…11But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”
In essence He is saying, “To dissolve political bands which have connected them with another… which impel them to separation.”Mat 10:34-39
We are commanded by God to “Honor our father and mother.” Ex 20:12; 21:15, 17; Lev 18:7; 19:3; 20:9; Deut 5:16; Mat 15:4; 19:5, 19; Mark 10:7, 19; Luke 18:20; Eph 6:2
What our Lord said refutes the idiom:“Blood is thicker than water”
This blood is the earthly blood of family relationships and the hold it has over people.
The “water”, in a Biblical analogy, is “the Word of God”, which tells us of the person and work of Jesus Christ – spiritual blood.
We could say, “Earthly blood is thicker than spiritual blood” or “Our family is more important to us than the Lord Jesus Christ.”
When the believer chooses earthly blood over spiritual blood he becomes a loser in the spiritual realm.
2 Tim 4:3-4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths (MUTHOS, a speech, story, fable).
This believer allows his family to dictate to him what he should be doing. As a result he steps outside of God’s plan for his life.
The Lord requires obedience to Himself and “the dissolving of the bands” that tie you in bondage to sin, human good, and Satan’s Cosmic System.
Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ was always consistent in His relationship to the Father, and we must be consistent in our relationship with the Son.
John 12:25-26, “He who loves his (earthly) life loses it, and he who hates (MISEO) his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”
If you follow Christ, you will gain an even greater family than you could have ever imagined. Mat 12:49-50; 19:29
Mat 12:49-50,“And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! 50For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:34-35; Luke 8:21)
Mat 19:29, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.” (Mark 10:29-30)
