What is the Bible and Why is it Important? • The word Bible comes from the ancient Greek word “biblios,” meaning book • The Bible is considered a special book for everyone but Christians and Jews in particular because it is a sacred book • The Bible is a human book because it’s full of stories and experiences of people who love, hate, live, die , laugh, cry, fight wars, make peace, seek freedom, fight oppression, wonder, doubt, believe, struggle, hope, are good, are evil, have true and false love, are faithful, betray, create and destruct
What is the Bible and Why is it Important cont’d? • The Bible is a sacred book because it was the first book made and it was inspired by God • 3 major religions based on the Bible are Judaism, Christianity and Islam • The Bible’s 2 main parts are the Hebrew Scripture and Christian Scripture • The Islamic religion includes both sections of the Bible
The Hebrew Scriptures • Consists of 46 books • 4 main sections – Pentateuch, Historical Books, Prophetical Books, Wisdom Books • Pentateuch (5 books) – describes origins of people of Israel • Historical Books – provide understanding of God’s intentions for Israel (16 books) • Wisdom Books – profound understanding of the mysteries of life, which is ultimately due to God (7 books) • Prophets were understood to be individuals inspired by God (18 books)
