  1. Physical Geography of Eastern Africa

  2. Ngorongoro Crater • World's largest volcanic crater • Located in Northern Tanzania within the boundary of the Serengeti National Park • Considered a mini Africa • Densest population of animals found anywhere in Africa • Best place to get up close to a wide variety of wildlife • Safari tourism dominates here

  3. Olduvai (Oldupai) Gorge • A deep desert-like ravine • Located in Northern Tanzania within the boundary of the Serengeti National Park • Also known as the “Cradle of Humanity” • The place where the fossil remains of our earliest ancestors have been found • Footprints and bones have been found that date back as many as 2 million years • From our early ancestor known as Homo Habilis

  4. Mount Kilimanjaro • Tallest mountain peak in Africa at 19,340 ft • Located in Northern Tanzania near the equator • Even though it is near the equator it is covered by a glacier all year round • An extinct volcano that is fairly easily climbed by tourists each year

  5. Lake Victoria • Largest lake in Africa • Uganda and Tanzania occupy most of the lakeshore • Largest tropical lake in the world • Home to hundreds of species of fish • Sold to pet stores around the world • Sold to people to put into tropical fish tanks • The most densely populated area of East Africa • Locals harvest the resources from the lake for survival • Over fishing and pollution have started to cause damage to the lake and the fish in it

  6. Tribes of Eastern Africa

  7. Video The Hamar • They live in the southern Ethiopian desert • Extremely kind and inquisitive people • Known for mud dried hair and aluminum jewelry • Tell people’s fortunes • Goat’s intestines • Tests of manhood • Running on the backs of cows • Used to impress the opposite sex

  8. Video The Mursii • Nomads that live in the southern Ethiopian desert • Searching for grazing land for their animals • Violent and warlike people • Modern weapons have made them very dangerous • They use sticks fights to settle disputes • Often kill their opponent with a machine gun or machete • Known for mutilating their bodies • Lip plates and ear loops • Mutilation was started during the slave trade • Made them less attractive to the slave traders • Still done today for tradition

  9. Video The Maasai (Masai) • Nomadic herders (African Cowboys) • Live in the Ngorongoro crater of northern Tanzania and the Maasai Mara of southern Kenya • Raise cows, sheep, and goats • Known for their warriors • Maasai boys train their entire life to one day kill a lion • Viewed as an act of bravery, skill, wisdom, and achievement • Allows warriors to show off their fighting skills • Killing lions is discouraged by the government, but it is still done • Popular tribe visited by tourists

  10. Issues in Eastern Africa

  11. Low Standard of Living • Like Southern Africa life is not always good for the people of Eastern Africa • Poverty, crime, and famine are very common • Education, healthcare, housing, etc are poor • Civil war within countries is also very common • Generally between different ethnic groups or groups that have different wealth and power because of resources • Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania • The only countries that have good conditions

  12. Civil War in Uganda • War between the Ugandan government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) • LRA wants the following from the government • Remove dictatorship, stop oppression of people, and create a democracy for the people • End human rights violations and restore peace and security • Most believe the LRA is worse than the government • Invisible Children of Uganda • Children are affected the most by this war • Many have been forced to join the LRA and fight • The rest live in fear that they will be abducted • Many sleep away from home, have limited education, and their future does not look bright

  13. Civil War in Rwanda • War is going on between the two main ethnic groups of the country • The Hutus and Tutsis • Europeans unknowingly created this civil war • When Rwanda was a colony more power was given to the Tutsi minority because they looked more European • When Rwanda got its independence the Hutu majority violently seized power from the Tutsis • The Hutus have since slaughtered about 1 million Tutsis

  14. Civil War in Sudan • Similar to Rwanda, war is going on between two ethnic groups in a western region called Darfur • On the surface it seems to be a religious war • Its NOT, it is over the country’s limited resources • The government is supporting one group called the Janjaweed • They have committed genocide of their rivals • Deliberate and systematic destruction of an entire people who belong to one racial, political, cultural or religious group • The Janjaweed have killed between 200,000 and 400,000 • The United Nations (UN) has sent troops to try to help resolve the issues, but this has not worked
