The Aftermath • After the repeal of the Stamp Act the colonists believed they had WON – and actually set aside March 18 as the first national holiday. • GB still believed they had the right to tax the colonists whenever they wanted. • The relationship between the two were strained. With the addition of the NY Legislative, the Mass. Compensation, and the Regulators Issue, the two grew further apart.

  3. Named after Charles Townshend, was created to help pay for the running of the colonies. The colonists were only paying about 5 to 10% of its actual costs to GB. They were not a direct tax but duties placed on products coming into the colonies. It also established new custom commission to collect the taxes in Boston. The Townshend Duties of 1767

  5. Peaceful Reaction • A Philadelphia Lawyer John Dickinson, wrote several letters to newspapers. • In his letters, entitled Letters of a Pennsylvania Farmer, he argued that GB had the right to control imperial commerce but did not have the right to tax the colonists. • Lets read an example

  6. Peaceful Reaction • The Colonists began an all out Boycott of GB goods. • Many colonists believed that any duties or taxes should be placed upon them by their elected Rep. No GB. • People began drink substitute for tea and wear more home-spun clothing. • Within a year, imports feel 40%.

  7. The king sent over many new custom officials to collect the new duties. The collection of the duties led to violence throughout the colonies. Which prompted the king to send more troops. Several officials were roughly handled while trying to collect the duties, primarily in Boston. The overall scene became violent on March 5, 1770, with the tragedy of the Boston Massacre.   8. The Repeal • The Massacre and the Economic Impact led to the repeal of the Townshend Duties in 1770. • All of the duties were repealed except on Tea. The justification was that tea was a luxury item drank by a small minority. • To most of the colonists, they were content with the action – they had won again!

  9. The “Quiet Period” • The repeal of the duties began a two year period known as the quiet period. • The beginning of the Committees of Correspondence.
