  5. Measure total rise from deck to ground (inches) CALCULATING CARRIAGES

  6. Choose riser height • 6”, 6.5”, or 7” • Total rise ÷ riser height = # of risers • Round answer to whole number • Total rise ÷ # of risers = Riser height CALCULATING CARRIAGES

  7. 4. Subtract 1 from number of risers • (to account for first riser of deck rim joist) CALCULATING CARRIAGES

  8. 24” – (Riser height x 2) = Tread length • Number of treads = Number or risers • Riser height x tread length = Total horizontal span CALCULATING CARRIAGES

  9. 2 x 12 lumber • 2' longer than diagonal measurement • Carriage 2’ apart CUTTING CARRIAGES

  10. Landing support: concrete blocks • Additional support to rim joist: blocking INSTALLATION
