Transitions Stories / experiences brought to subgroup highlighted the difficulties experienced by some individuals and families around transition from paediatric to adult care within the health service One recommendation was that all patients leaving hospital are given card with contact number of hospitals and support organisations Meeting with patients to be held soon to gather views and recommendations
Patient card A patient card has been produced for use in each of the hospital burns units – it will be given out to all burns patients The card includes a contact number for the particular unit, other hospitals across Scotland, Changing Faces Scotland, Scottish Burned Children’s Club and British Association of Skin Camouflage
Audit of the availability of psychological support for patients sustaining burn injury
Aim • To identify the availability of psychological support for burned patients in Scotland • Method • Questionnaire circulated to each of the burns units in Scotland requesting information on services provided • All units returned questionnaires – 7/7
Referral • Either formal (5/7) or informal (7/7) • Made by either nursing 1/7 medical 1/7 either 5/7 • Advice leaflets • Nursing/medical advice 7/7 • Physio 5/7 • Psychological issues 3/7 • Contact details • Unit 6/7 • Other e.g. ChangingFaces / SBCC 5/7
Conclusions • Lack of dedicated psychology support • Variety of other support offered in units • More detailed audit required – into practice, training, and skills of staff, and needs of patients
Recommendedongoing work for CoBiS Continue to gather patient views, via questionnaires, patient stories, meetings etc More work on transitions – following up the meeting with patients Carry out more detailed audit of psychosocial support Gain more psychology resource for burns units Develop routine psychosocial assessment and care plan for all patients Look at psychosocial training needs of staff
