French nouns - singular • All nouns in French have a gender. When there is only one thing (singular) the word for ‘a’ needs to match the gender: • Unis used with masculine words. • Uneused with feminine words. un garçon – a boy une file – a girl
French nouns - plural • When there is more than one thing (plural) instead of saying ‘a’ we say ‘some. • To say ‘some’ in French the word is ‘des’ for both masculine and feminine plurals. • Remember you need to add an –s to the noun to make the word plural: ungarçondes garçons unefilledesfilles • Words that end in –u add an –x instead of an –s in the plural form: ungâteaudes gâteaux
‘It’s’ and ‘they are’ in French • C’est(pronounced ‘say’) is used to mean it is’ C’est un garçon (it’s a boy) C’estunefille (it’s a girl) • When there is more than one thing (plural) you need to say cesont: Cesontdes garçons Cesontdes filles Sometimes cesontcan also mean ‘these are’ depending on context. Think about what would best make sense in English to work out when it means ‘they are’ and when it means ‘these are’.
