What does it cost to build a wind turbine? Capital costs for wind projects are $1,500 - $2,000 per kilowatt of nameplate capacity. • How does the cost of wind energy compare to other energy sources? • Wind-generated electricity has become more economical to produce in the past 10 years, dropping from as much as 30 cents per kilowatt-hour to 4.5 to 7.5 cents, making it more competitive with other energy sources. The cost to develop and build a wind energy facility is approximately $1.3 million to $1.7 million per megawatt, compared to a cost for gas-fired energy generation of $800,000 per megawatt.
Can wind power from wind farms or turbines be stored? • In most cases it is not stored. But there are a number of methods (batteries, compressed air storage, hydro) in partial use and in experimental projects. One Japanese company is planning to build wind turbines with built-in batteries.
Why do wind turbines only have three arms and not many as in say a jet engine turbine Also why can't they be horizontal like the wind speed generators at airfields? Yes, There are wind turbines with more than three blades... Basically that would only apply for the turbines which are not commercial like the turbines which are installed at home etc. and there are also wind turbines with horizontal axis, and again that would not apply to commercial wind farm. Usually Wind Turbines are BIG in size and mostly used to Generate Commercial Electricity so installing a Turbine with more than 3 turbines is not a viable thing.
