Advocacy for the profession • What is advocacy? • How does advocacy impact the profession? • How does leadership (or does it) relate?
An Advocate is…. • Someone who speaks for another • Legal • Human rights • Health care
Professional Role • Behind the scenes MLTs are vital members of the healthcare team in their key role of laboratory testing. • 70% of patient’s file is medical lab results • 70% of physician’s treatment plan is based on quality lab results
Making a difference… • as part of the bigger health care picture, think outside of the lab and realize the contribution that you make in your daily worklife
Within your organization “Your profession is not what brings home your paycheck. Your profession is what you were put on earth to do. With such passion and such intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.” -Virgil Ancient Roman Poet and Author, 70-19 BC http://thinkexist.com/quotes/virgil/
Outside of your organization “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill
Voice and Action? …requires self confidence and self leadership.
Why our voices and our actions? OUR Patients!
It is for them…. • That we should get involved, develop ourselves as leaders, advocate for the profession, and help shape the future of lab medicine.
