Overview of census tracts (CTs) • Originally defined in 1941, extensively revised in 1971 • Local planners and STC define neighbourhoods • Occur only in census metropolitan areas (CMAs, large cities) and census agglomerations (CAs, smaller cities, 50,000+ population) • Population between 2,500 and 8,000
Introduction to census tracts (cont’d) • Boundaries have not changed substantially since 1971 • Identified by CMA code + ct name, e.g. CMA=535 (Toronto) + ct=061.00 • CTs are split when they grow too large • Toronto’s Annex, 091.00 , in 1986 split into 091.01 and 091.02

N.B. be aware of hierarchical relationships • Total population 5 years and over • Non-movers • Movers • Non-migrants • Migrants • Internal migrants • Intraprovincial migrants • Interprovincial migrants • External migrants
Things to notice about census tract statistics: • All statistics randomly rounded up or down to nearest multiple of 5 • Census tracts may be suppressed due to: • insufficient population (less than 40 or 250) • more than 25% non-response
CHASS interface • Census data for 1996, 1991, 1986, 1981 • Geographic levels: • census tract • enumeration areas • federal electoral district • Canada and provinces/territories <http://dc1.chass.utoronto.ca/census/ct.html>
CHASS interface: output to Excel • In the CHASS interface, Select output format: Spreadsheet (comma-delimited) • Cut and paste ‘Variable references’, column headers, and data rows to WordPad (or similar) • Save WordPad file as MS-DOS format text with a .csv extension (e.g. cc96mig.csv)
CHASS interface: output to Excel (cont’d) • In Excel 97, open Excel, then File/Open/ and select filename (e.g. cc96mig.csv) • Remember to change ‘Files of type’ to .csv • In Excel 2000, click on filename (e.g. cc906mig.csv) in Windows Explorer to open in Excel
Printed census statistics • Profile volumes at census tract level from • 1996 census: 95-205 to 95-213 • 1991 census: 95-303 to 95-392 • 1986 census: 95-101 to 95-174 • 1981 census: 95-905 to 95-940, 95-946 to 95-981 • 1976 census: 95-800 to 95-831 • 1971 census: 95-701 to 95-729
Printed census statistics (cont’d) • Contain significantly fewer items per census tract than the computer-readable profiles • Located in Government Documents, 5th floor, Robarts Library • All census publications in one area - ask at the Reference Desk • Census publications do not circulate, photocopy machines are available
