Local Oscillator Source Unit (LSU) • Status Report • By • Karl Saad, CSA Project Manager • & • Graham Arbery, COM DEV Lead Engineer • HIFI Consortium Meeting • (19-20 April 2004, Utrecht)
2 • Overview • Technical Review – Graham Arbery • LSU technical status • LSU Requirements being discussed • LSU specification compliance • LSU Breadboard AIT Plan/Integrated Breadboard • Programmatic Status – Karl Saad • Milestone achievements • Current challenges • Outstanding issues • Project Risks • Schedule
3 LSU Technical Status • Design proceeding towards PDR on 2-3 June 2004 • All components now in house to allow assembly of integrated breadboard in May • DM fabrication has started on some parts
5 LSU Requirements Being Discussed • Band 6 design change under discussion: • Disable level control loop for the four Band 6 outputs • Run output amplifier in saturation to improve noise • Fixed attenuator at output to limit the power • 6 dBpp output power variation with frequency setting, temperature and life
6 LSU Requirements Being Discussed
7 LSU Specification Compliance
8 LSU Breadboard AIT Plan • Single phase lock loop (9.9-11.9 GHz) • Output chain with no ALC (31.44-35.04 GHz) • Assembled on handling plate • Planned tests at COM DEV (ambient) • Tuning ranges, lock timing • Output power variation with tuning, rail voltage • Phase noise and spurious with tuning (limited) • Planned customer tests (ambient) • Phase noise
HIFI LSU – Programmatic status 10 • Milestone achievements to date: • Internal PDR: held on 2 Feb 04 • Technical review with SRON, MPIfR, JPL and ESA • Enabled CSA to close off Phase B • Enabled constructive review of the LSU design • Internal to CSA – no RIDS generated. However, action items not closed off by SRON and MPIfR will be follow-up at PDR. • Project approval by Canadian Government Treasury Board on 23 Feb 04 for Phase C. • Contract with COM DEV - Phase C: detailed design and build of LSU DM as of 24 Feb 2004 • CSA QA Audit of COM DEV – completed 24 Mar 2004 • Next Project Approval - Status: • CSA Program Review and Advisory Board in April 2004 & authority to seek Treasury Board Approval • Seeking Treasury Board approval in May/June 2004 for Phase D
HIFI LSU – Programmatic status 11 • Current challenges: • Impact of Tyco components on LSU delivery schedule • Breadboards (prototypes) delayed 14 weeks(Mitigation: COM DEV procurement of add'n components) • Non-flight parts (DM) delayed 12 weeks • Flight parts (FM) delayed 8 weeks • Use of silicon-alumina (AlSi) under review • Comment: -Thanks go to SRON for its assistance in helping resolve this issue. • -And also, to ESA, for responding in a very supportive way. • OmniYIG (YIG Oscillators) non-compliance with procurement specifications • These non-compliances were raised last week • Under review by COM DEV • Phase Lock Oscillator (PLO) EQM components • Suitability for use in LSU DM under review • Components not environmentally tested (shock testing)/Microwave Dynamics to perform tests • Later than desired deliveries of FM components from CPPA: • PLO from Microwave Dynamics 20 week lead time (approx 5 Sep 04) • 10 MHz Crystal Oscillator from Vectron - 8 Oct 04 • Tecnologica is addressing these issues/CSA&COM DEV following up closely
HIFI LSU – Programmatic status 12 • Outstanding Issues • Band 6 Change Notice: • under impact assessment by COM DEV • CN not accepted by CSA • Potential impacts on: • LSU design and components under manufacturing • Cost impact to CSA • Schedule impact for SRON
HIFI LSU – Programmatic status 13 • LSU Project Risks: • Design impacts from CPPA parts during LSU integration (non-compliant performance). • Mitigation: strong CSA & COM DEV involvement in the procurement process. LSU breadboard activities. • Parts procurement process with CPPA: ensuring timely & compliant delivery of parts to COM DEV. • Mitigation: For Tyco: SRON and CSA requested ESA's assistance in this matter. ESA appointed one focal POC for Tyco issues. For other components: CSA/COM DEV with SRON will maintain additional efforts to oversee the procurement activities (ESA could assist if required) • PFM build initiation prior to LSU DM being finalised. Calculated risk to achieve an aggressive schedule. However, there could be potential impacts in Phase D (PFM build). • Mitigation: Initiate PFM start after successful first ambient testing on DM.
HIFI LSU – Schedule 14 • DM (Phase C) • PDR: 2-3 June 2004 • DM TRR: 19 Nov 2004 • Pre-ship Review: 14 Jan 2004 • LSU DM delivery to SRON: 21 Jan 2005 • SRON Target Date for DM: 1 Dec 2004 • (Delta: 7 weeks) • LSU Breadboard availability: End June 2004 • (Noise measurements)
HIFI LSU – Schedule 15 • DM (Phase C) • PDR: 2-3 June 2004 • DM TRR: 19 Nov 2004 • Pre-ship Review: 14 Jan 2004 • LSU DM delivery to SRON: 21 Jan 2005 • SRON Target Date for DM: 1 Dec 2004 (Delta: 7 weeks) • LSU Breadboard availability: End June 2004 • (Noise measurements) • PFM (Phase D) • Phase D start: 3 Dec 2004 • CDR: 25 Jan 2005 • PFM TRR: 13 May 2005 • Pre-ship Review: 27 July 2005 • LSU PFM delivery to SRON: 4 Aug 2005 • SRON Target Date for PFM: 1 June 2005 (Delta: 8 weeks)
