Overview Of today’s short course: Explore Plate Tectonics Using GPS Data Shelley E. Olds olds@unavco.org NSTA 2008 National Conference March 27, 2008 UNAVCO
Short Course Content Why we are here today • Share UNAVCO as a resource • Learn about exciting science: Current GPS research and discoveries • Provide educational materials • Think about how to add to your teaching Materials are available at: http://www.unavco.org/cws/UsingData/
Today’s Activities • Explore concepts & relationships with visualization tools: Jules Verne Voyager tools and Google Earth overlays • Digging deeper: Examine evidence through data products. Data for Educators & GPS time series plots • Starting at the source: Access & analyze GPS data to investigate trends. GPS data sets
Course Outcomes Participants will be able to • Discuss high-precision GPS and its application to plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes, • Interpret GPS time series plots to determine regional plate velocity • Access resources to support classroom implementation, • Implement these resources in a your classroom
21st Century Science • Integrating research and education • What is the cutting edge research in crustal deformation • How is it done • What new discoveries are being made • Nature of science • Engaging students with Earth system data • Quantitative skills • Visualization of data • Models – what are they, how do we develop • Integration of data • Careers in geosciences
Think About… Instructional Approaches … Lecture w/ Discussion and/or questions (clickers) Students need: • Varied instructional approaches … • Varied learning styles • Varied modes of processing information (verbal, written, visual, kinesthetic, etc) • To learn how to think like scientists… Inquiry-base learning Guided activities Constructivist Lecture Passive Active Not to scale
Plate Boundary Observatory • A continent-scale network of GPS, borehole, and laser strainmeters focusing on the extended plate boundary and extending into the continental interior • Measurements of • Extension/compression • Dilatation • Tilt
US Transportable Array A continent-spanning deployment of seismometers for imaging the deep interior of the North American continent
SAFOD A borehole laboratory on the San Andreas fault studying the physics of earthquake nucleation at the depths where earthquakes begin.
