Energy Levels And Drawing Energy Level Diagrams
Energy Levels • Electrons travel within the Electron Cloud, but at different distances from the nucleus. • Energy Level close to nucleus - Low Energy Electrons • Energy Level farthest away - High Energy Electrons
Electrons in Energy Levels • Lowest = Energy Level # 1 • Can hold a maximum of TWO electrons. • Next = Energy Level # 2 • Can hold a maximum of EIGHT electrons.
Electrons in Energy Levels • Next = Energy level # 3 • Can hold a maximum of EIGHTEEN electrons. • Next = Energy Level # 4 • Can hold a maximum of THIRTY-TWO electrons.
Drawing Energy Levels • FIRST - Make a nucleus with the # of Protons and Neutrons labeled. Example: Draw a Cl atom. 17 p 18 n
E.L. #1 17 p 18 n • SECOND - Draw in the 1st energy level and try to fill it with electrons. • Example: If you fill this level, but have more electrons - go to the next energy level.
E.L. #2 E.L. #1 17 p 18 n • THIRD - Draw in the 2nd energy level and try to fill it with electrons. Example: If you fill this level, but still have more electrons - Continue to the next energy levels until all electrons are in place.
E.L. #3 E.L. #2 E.L. #1 17 p 18 n Example: Chlorine
