  2. Simile • Uses to things to compare like or as. He is as slow as a turtle.

  3. Metaphor • To things that are being compared without using like or as. • The people are animals.

  4. Personification • Giving human traits to objects or ideas. • The water shivered with the sunlight.

  5. Onomatopoeia • Words that represent the actual sound of something are words of onomatopoeia. • The rain drops fell on the house.

  6. Hyperbole • Exaggerating to show strong feeling or effect. • He is a million years old.

  7. Understatement • Expression with less strength than expected. • We will be there in no time.

  8. Alliteration • Mrs. Shook should surely sleep late. • The repetition of the first consonant sound in words.

  9. Idioms • Expressions that don’t mean what exactly what they say. • When her company went out of business her money went down the drain.
