Security problem description What is the (security) problem that you think should be solved or addressed by your institution? • Ship colliding with ice in the arctic sea region • Rescue people in distress as quickly as possible Question 2: Can you add specifics to the cause of the problem? • Accident / bad seamanship Question 3: How do you handle the security problem described at the moment? Establish a search and rescue mission scrambling: • Rescue ships preferable equipped with helicopter • Maritime patrol aircrafts • Merchant ships in the area Question 4: What would you like to improve regarding the current situation? • Optimize the search phase of the SAR mission in order to minimize the time required for rescue resources to arrive
Investment and alternatives • Dull, Dirty and Dangerous is where UAV operations especially hold a potential. Even more so when describing SAR missions. • SAR teams operate continuously, day and night, in sometimes hazardous missions and in all kinds of weather conditions • Sensors becomes smaller and vision sensors are enabling application into more demanding fields such as geomatics. Improvement is also present for generic infrared sensors (thermal, night vision) which is of interest for surveillance applications and extensive to SAR
