God is Not a Dictator Four Errors About Inerrancy
My OTHER website…. http://www.tektoonics.com
The Chicago Statement The Chicago Statement is the main statement of doctrine which describes inerrancy. No….it’s not about “deep dish pizza”… Please…hold the matches until we’re finished…thank you.
Myth #1: Inspiration Equals Dictation Did God control every single stroke of the pen? “The mode of divine inspiration remains largely a mystery to us.” – Chicago Statement, Article 7
Myth #1: Inspiration Equals Dictation Inspiration is NOT: • God controlling the pen personally • God giving dictation word for word Inspiration IS: God using the natural abilities of His human instruments to get the results He wants
Myth #2: We Are the Standard Do we assume our meaning and values – or look for theirs? “[God] utilized the distinctive personalities and literary styles of the writers whom He had chosen and prepared.” -Chicago Statement, Article 8
Myth #2: We Are the Standard When reading the Bible, DO NOT: • Assume your values onto the text • Automatically conclude that something you don’t understand is wrong or “nonsense”, etc. When reading the Bible, DO: • Seek out answers from qualified sources to questions that are raised in your reading • Try to find out what it meant to the people who first wrote and read it • Judge the text by THEIR standards
Myth #3: Inerrancy Means Covering Every Possible Misinterpretation “Duh…the Bible is not clear. Must be God’s fault.”
1 Kings 9:26 (King James Version) And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.
1 Kings 9:26 (Picky Atheist Version) And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-Geber, which is beside Eloth, which was on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom, at the time I wrote this. In the year which will be numbered 2008 (according to a system to be invented by some people called Romans) Ezion-geber will not be by the Red sea any more because the water will recede.
Myth #4: Inerrancy Means Inerrant Copies [Inspiration] applies only to the autographic text of Scripture...– Chicago Statement, Article 10
Myth #4: Inerrancy Means Inerrant Copies “But why DIDN’T God keep the copies inerrant?” • It would lead to “bibliolatry” (historical note: RELICS!) • It would lead to restricted access to the Bible
