OCTY 3206Learning CirclesSession 3 3rd Year Clinical Education Support Tutorials Presentation by Wendy Davila Clinical Education Liaison Manager Division of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences 2007
Objectives of Session 3 • To share your experiences at placement • To identify the personal challenges and their implications for you • To gain an awareness of your stress levels and reactions • To gain some skills in stress management for clinical placements
Work Life Balance • Think about how you are managing the addition of clinical placement to your life. • What are some of the main challenges you are experiencing on placement?
Work Life Balance • Challenges - external • Family responsibilities • Transport • Financial Issues • Part time work issues • Challenges - internal • Anxieties about the expectations on placement • Anxieties about your performance as a student therapist • Managing work load
Strategies • Support Mechanisms • Organization • Self Confidence • Rewards • Stress Management
Support Mechanisms • Use the support of family and peers • Seek out support from your CE and staff at your clinical placement • Make time to catch up with your friends, go to the gym or keep up with some social activities • Share your experiences and celebrate your achievements • Accept help and support from others • Use email to keep in contact with your main supports or use the discussion board to seek help with issues or information on specific topics
Organization • Use of diary – for appointments and to do lists • Use of timetables for work and home • Family/Part time Work organization – weekly activities, responsibilities, think about decreasing hours or postponing activities • Study/ Assignments – map out when assessment pieces are due • Eliminate certain tasks that are not essential whilst you are on placement. • Leaving 10 minutes early so you have ten minutes to spare and prepare yourself at your desk.
Self Confidence • Powerful thoughts: Watch the negative perceptions we may have of ourselves or situations • Try to think positively about people and situations • Watch the negative self talk – • They’ll think I am stupid if I ask that question. • How could they possibly think I could do that? I haven’t even graduated yet. • I never was good at managing my time. • I can’t believe I said that! • Be prepared to ‘have a go’! • Look out for things that you can participate in. • Regularly meet with supervisor – have weekly meeting booked in • Take control of setting your own goals and make them realistic goals
Rewards • Don’t necessarily wait to be rewarded by others: Reward yourself along the way. • Give yourself credit when you perform well. • Share your successes with family and friends. • Enjoy time out from the stresses. • Rewards can be simple and cheap! ( Although expensive rewards are really great as well!)
Stress Management Strategies • List a range of strategies that you can use: • In the workplace • Outside the workplace
Stress Management • Have a proper balance of work, sleep, exercise, and social activities. • Recognize and accept limits – we can never be perfect so set achievable goals for yourself • Take a Breath • Walk outside the building or eat lunch outside • Pursue activities which relieve stress- meditation, relaxation, visualization – Seek out resources to assist with this. • Seek support of University Clinical Education Liaison Managers. • Seek support of Student Services if major issues arise • www.mindtools.com
Extending your skills • See the unexpected as an opportunity to learn new skills • Ask for feedback from colleagues and friends on ways to improve (because you want to, not because you seek the approval of others) • Have a balanced life which includes activities outside of work • Be observant of those around you to gain skills in how others manage stress. Seek the assistance of someone you admire as a mentor or supervisor • Use the learning circles to seek the support of your peers. Who better to understand than your fellow students.
Summary • Enjoy your clinical placement experiences and make the most of the opportunities you encounter. • Remember we are here to support you and to see to your well being. • Recognize the importance of your well being, your confidence, and managing stress. Be aware of how this influences your performance. • Your well being is important because there is only one of you and you are the most important person to you
