Thesis Statement • States main idea: “Jim-bob is the very definition of a survivor because through determination and a team of great medical doctors, he overcame cancer.” • Is supported by EVERY SENTENCE IN YOUR PAPER! Don’t put in anything that does not back up your Thesis statement! • Goes at the END of your 1st Paragraph
MLA Format-Why? • Gives a reliable basis for your research • No matter your major, in college you will write these and your professor will simply tell your either APA or MLA Format • Shows your audience that you are educated and have checked deep into your information instead of just “winging it”
MLA Format- Heading & Title Your Name Acker English II-(your class period) 2 January 2013 Creative Title • All double spaced • Aligned to the left except for title. Title is Centered.
MLA Format-Body & Parenthetical Citation • Must have 1 direct quote to support each point • May also use paraphrasing but STILL CITE IT! Within a paper, citations look like this: Red was a good daughter, and her mother often said that she, “Calmly obeyed every request made of her,” (Acker 4) Author’s last name and page number- NO COMMAS!

MLA Format: Orphan Quotes Wrap up a quote in YOUR OWN WORDS! Don’t create an orphan quote. Ex. of Orphan Quote: Marcie reads a lot. “She had piles and piles of books around her nightstand (Acker 422).” Ex. of Non-Orphan Quote: Marcie reads a lot, and she has, “Piles and piles of books around her nightstand (Acker 422).”
MLA Format- Page Numbers & Spacing • Double space everything in your paper, including Heading and Works Cited • Each page MUST have a page number and YOUR last name!
MLA Format-Closing • In final paragraph, DO NOT RESTATE THESIS! • In a few, brief statements, explain how the information and quotes you gave supported your thesis statements
