  1. Intro To Concrete

  2. Vocab • Aggregate- A hard rock like mass of sand, gravel, or crushed rock. • Air Entraining- Material added to concrete to make it more durable • Bleeding- Condition where water rises to the surface of concrete due to excessive finishing.

  3. Vocab cont • Cement- a finally grounded manufactured product that when mixed with water forms the paste to make concrete. • Compressive Strength- The ability of a material to resist crushing

  4. Vocab cont • Concrete- Rock-like mass formed when cement paste and aggregate are allowed to cure for a period of time • Cubic Foot- Volume formed by a cube having a dimension of one foot on each dimension • Entrained Air-Air bubbles formed in concrete due to addition of air entraining admixtures.

  5. Vocab Cont • Entrapped Air-Air bubbles in concrete that have been entrapped during the mixing process. • Slump- A test to determine wetness or dryness workability of a concrete mix. • Tensile Strength- The ability of a material to resist pulling apart. • Water/Cement Ratio:- The amount of water compared to the amount of cement in concrete mix.

  6. What is concrete? • Concrete is hard construction material: a mixture of cement, sand, aggregate, and water in specific proportions that hardens to a strong stony consistency over varying lengths of time • Concrete is the most widely used product to build buildings.

  7. Rules to make quality work • Using proper ingredients • Correctly proportioning the ingredients • Accurately measuring the ingredients • Following proper finishing and curing methods

  8. Concrete • Concrete weighs about 150-160 lbs per cubic foot • Through the ingredients it can be manipulated to various compression, flexural, and tensile strength to satisfy structure requirements

  9. Concrete will remain a great basic structure. . . • While supplies of construction are decreasing the components of concrete are plentiful • Requires low energy input • Great appeal strength, versatile, durability and fire resistant.

  10. Principal ingredients • Cement, water, and Air make up cement paste • This takes up 20-40% total volume of concrete

  11. Air entrained Cement Ratio’s • Cement • 15% Water -18% Air -8% Fine Aggregate -28% Coarse Aggregate -31%

  12. Straight Edge • Usually the first tool used. Function is to strike off the concrete surface to a proper grade.

  13. Edger • To edge your concrete

  14. Aluminum Float/ Wood Float • To have a smooth finish

  15. Bull Float • Used after the straight edge

  16. Jointer • Used to cut a joint partly through fresh concrete

  17. Finishing Trowel • To finish the concrete

  18. Power Trowel • Finishing tool that has a motor (saves time and effort)

  19. Pointing trowel • For cement of mason laying

  20. Brick Trowel • Used when laying brick or masonry work.
