They were descendant from families who were living in American territories and states before they had been acquired in various treaties and wars: the Louisiana Purchase, 1804, the Adams-Onis Treaty (Florida), 1822, the annexation of Texas, 1845, the Mexican Cession (after the Mexican-American War), 1848, and the Gadsden Purchase (parts of Arizona and New Mexico), 1853. Their right to automatic US citizenship was guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.
