A Review of Fractions R521 Kristen Swangin Leesa Folkerth Nikki Nelson
Topics Covered • Equivalent fractions • Adding fractions • Subtracting fractions • Reducing fractions
Equivalent Fractions • What are equivalent fractions? • How do we convert a fraction to an equivalent fraction with a larger denominator? • How do we convert a fraction to an equivalent fraction with a smaller denominator?
Equivalent Fractions Equivalent fractions are fractions that show different numbers with the same value. and are equivalent fractions
Equivalent Fractions To convert a fraction to an equivalent fraction we multiply the numerator and the denominator by a fraction with a value of 1.
Adding Fractions To add fractions with like denominators, add the numerators and keep the same denominator
Adding Fractions To add fractions with unlike denominators, find the least common multiple of the denominators. Then create equivalent fractions to the original fractions that have the common multiple as the denominator. Rewrite the problem using equivalent fractions and solve.
Subtracting Fractions To subtract fractions with like denominators, subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator
Subtracting Fractions To subtract fractions with unlike denominators, find the least common multiple of the denominators. Then create equivalent fractions to the original fractions that have the common multiple as the denominator. Rewrite the problem using equivalent fractions and solve.
Reducing Fractions • A fraction is reduced to lowest terms by finding an equivalent fraction where the numerator and denominator are as small as possible. • This means that there is no number, except 1, that can divide evenly into both the numerator and the denominator.
