  2. Key Terms • Urbanization • The movement of people from rural settings to the cities • Tenement • Multistory buildings divided into apartments where factory workers lived. • Labor union • Workers’ organization, illegal at the time; pushed for reforms (better pay, better hours, etc.) • Pauper • A very poor person

  3. Key Questions: chapter 7.3 • What led to the massive migration of people from farms to cities? • Changes in farming, soaring population growth and increasing demand for workers • What was life like in the new industrial cities? • While the middle class and wealthy lived in pleasant neighborhoods while the poor lived in tenements where garbage and waste rotted in the streets resulting in contaminated water; pollution!

  4. More key questions…. • What special problems did factory work create for women? • Their jobs took them out of their houses for 12 hours a day AND then they still had to go home and feed, clean, and clothe their families, care for the upkeep of the house, etc. • Low wages – long hours – not paid comparable to men

  5. How did the conditions of the early industrial age improve? • Child labor laws were eventually passed and inspectors were put into place to ensure the factories and mines followed the laws. • Labor union won the right to bargain with employers for better wages, hours, and working conditions.

  6. Why was the Industrial Revolution seen as both a blessing and a curse? • The Age brought terrible hardships but at the same time created more jobs and wages eventually raised.

  7. ??????????????? • Were the cons of industrialization worth it/ necessary for the progress made? Why/ why not? • Pros: new factories, more jobs, improved transportation: steamships, canals, railroads, turnpikes and eventually automobiles and airplanes • Cons: Low pay, child labor, terrible/ unsafe working conditions, long hours, loss of body parts • Was is worth it: YOU decide?
