  1. Love story set in the mid-1960s • Story told almost entirely through songs by The Beatles • Very theatrical with many psychedelic scenes • Depicts war, love, conflicts, and comedy

  2. Movie begins with Jude sitting on the beach singing “Girl.” He goes to America to find his father. In America, he meets Max, a fun-loving, laid back guy. The two become best friends. Max

  3. Jude falls for Lucy, Max’s younger sister. Lucy joins Max and Jude in New York, bringing news that Max is to be drafted. Although Max tries in vain to avoid going to war, he is sent against his will. She falls in love with Jude. Lucy has a boyfriend but he is killed almost as soon as he joins the army.

  4. Jude gets arrested at a violent war protest when trying to find Lucy, and is sent back to England. However, he returns to America legally, and finds Lucy again. As the war rages on, Lucy becomes more involved in efforts to stop it. Jude throws all of his efforts into his artwork for Sadie, the singer he’s renting his apartment from. The two become distant, and Lucy ends up leaving Jude.

  5. Subplots: • While the romance between Jude and Lucy is captivating, there are many other stories going on in the movie. • Prudence trying to find love • Conflicts between Sadie and JoJo • Lucy’s “peace loving” friends • The effects of war

  6. Across the Universe ends with a rooftop concert by Sadie and JoJo. Jude, back in America, is taken there by Max and sings “All You Need Is Love,” directing Lucy back to him.
