  1. Inductive ProximitySensors Sales Training Outline 2006 Klaus Tum Product Manager 35 Royal Road Flemington, NJ 908-806-9400 www.altechcorp.com

  2. Klaus Tum (short bio) • Electrical Engineer • 10 years with Altech Corporation • Product Manager of Circuit Breakers, Busbars, Motor Disconnect Switches,Foot Switches, Sensors, Contactors,Motor Starters, Pin & Sleeve Connectors

  3. Manufactured by • Altech Inductive Proximity Sensors (IPS’s) are manufactured by Pulsotronic in Germany. • Pulsotronic, a well known European manufacturer, has been designing and manufacturing IPS’s for over 30 years using state-of-the-art technology and is an ISO 9001 certified company. • Altech is Pulsotronic’s North American marketing partner. • Our Inductive Proximity Sensors meet National and International Standards and carry the CE Mark.

  4. Types of Proximity Sensors • Inductive Sensors • Optical Sensors • Capacitive Sensors • Ultrasonic sensors • Laser Sensors

  5. Introduction to Inductive Sensors • The Inductive Proximity Sensor (IPS) is a solid state device that generates an output signal when metal objects are either inside or entering into its sensing area from any direction. • No physical contact is required nor desired. • IPS’s work best with ferrous metals, however, they also work well with non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, copper, etc.) at reduced sensing distances.

  6. Applications • Machine Tool • Automotive • Packaging • Automation • Stamping • Conveyor Systems • Knitting Industry • Bottling and Food Industry • Elevator and Escalators • Robotics • Drugs and Cosmetics • Metal Forming Machines

  7. Range of the Altech Sensor Series • Cylindrical • Diameters from 4mm (.159 in.) to 30mm (1.18 in.) • Sensing Distances up to 40mm (1.57 in.)

  8. Range of the Altech Sensor Series • Limit Style (Versa-Prox) • Physically larger than Cylindrical • Sensing Distances up 40mm (1.57 in.) • Unique 17 position rotating sensing head

  9. Range of the Altech Sensor Series • Block • Sensing Distances up to 70mm (2.78 in.)

  10. Range of the Altech Sensor Series • Ring • Diameters from 12mm (.47 in.) to 300mm (11.91 in.) • Detect metal objects passing through the ring

  11. Ultra High Sensitivity Ring Application

  12. Range of the Altech Sensor Series • Flat Pack • widths measuring 240, 140 and 95mm • sandwich construction enables detection of metal particles above or below material handled on conveyor belts or chutes.

  13. Theory of Operation Operating Principles

  14. Theory of Operation Operating Principles

  15. Standard Sensing Targets • A standard target used to specify sensing distance is a square piece of mild steel having a thickness of 1mm (0.04 in.). The sides of the square are equal to the diameter of the circle inscribed on the sensor face or three times the rated operating distance Sn, whichever is greater.

  16. Operating Distance Correction Factors Target Material Correction Factor Mild Steel 1.0 x Sn Nickel Chromium 0.9 x Sn Stainless Steel 0.85 x Sn Brass 0.5 x Sn Aluminum 0.45 x Sn Copper 0.40 x Sn Other Factors Flat targets are preferable Targets larger than the sensing face may increase the sensing distance

  17. Digital and Analog • Digital indicates target presence or absence • Analog indicates distance from target to sensor
