Example of In-text Citations Quotations, Summary, Paraphrase, or Fact Quotations, Summary, Paraphrase, or Fact • Author named in a single phrase: Frederick Lane reports that employers can monitor their employees with “a hidden video camera pointed at an employees monitor” (147). • Author named in parenthesis: “Companies can monitor employees keystrokes without legal penalty” (Lane 129). • Author unknown: There are keystroke logging programs to give the details of workers’ online activity (“Automatically”). • If you do not have an author, you need to list your source – articles in quotes, with the first word only for long titles – and books in italics. • Treat websites the same as you would other sources.
Basic Helpful Hints for Using In-text Citations “The in-text citation is placed at the end of the sentence, and before the period” (Anderson 342). If you have more than one source you need to use the author’s last name and the page number (Johnson 16). If there is no author use the title of the article along with the page number (“Taking Notes” 4).
